Andthoughthefilmisdensewithsubtext,itisalsostunninglyphotographedandrichinatmosphereanddetail.TheperformancesareallamazingandKawamura'ssensitivehandlingofthestrange,delicaterelationshipsbetweenthecharactersresultsinanemotionallycharged,angst-riddentragedy. Thescenesoftheconfused,troubledmonsterhurtlingthroughafog-shroudedforestatnightarememorableandstriking,asisabrillianthomemovie-stylemontageofthefilm'smorecuriouscharactersenjoyingapreciousafternoonatthebeach.KawamuracreatesresonatingvisualpoetryofhorrorandsadnessbarelysightedsinceToddBrowning'sclassic"Freaks".
